About this tool

This VAT calculator works both ways: switch to "Add VAT" to go from a net (pre-tax) price to the gross price a customer pays, or switch to "Remove VAT" to back out the tax already included in a gross price and see the net amount and the VAT itself. Enter an amount and a rate, and the net, VAT and gross figures below update instantly so you can see exactly how they relate. The reference table lists commonly used VAT, GST and sales-tax rates around the world — click any row to drop that rate straight into the calculator.

VAT, GST and sales-tax rates vary by country, and many countries also apply reduced rates to specific goods and services (food, books, transport, and so on), plus some regions add local or state-level taxes on top. This tool is meant for quick estimates and cross-checking figures — always confirm the exact, current rate that applies to your specific transaction, location and product category with an official source before using it on an invoice, receipt or tax filing. All the math runs locally in your browser, so no amounts are ever sent to a server.

Frequently asked questions

Do I divide by (1 + rate) or multiply by rate to remove VAT?

To go from a gross (VAT-included) price back to net, divide by (1 + rate/100) — NOT multiply by the rate, which is a common mistake. For example, removing 20% VAT from a €120 gross price means €120 ÷ 1.20 = €100 net, not €120 − (€120 × 0.20) = €96 (which is wrong because that 20% was calculated on the wrong base). This tool's "Remove VAT" mode does the division for you automatically.
